French Neo-Classical Painter. He is known especially for his charming illustrations of Victorian life. He studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He fought in the Franco-Prussian War and then settled in England. As a caricaturist for Vanity Fair, he met London's social elite and became a fashionable portrait painter, especially of elegantly dressed women. In 1876 he met Kathleen Newton a young Irish woman, and disgraced divorcee. She became his mistriss, was also his muse, and appeared in many of his paintings. She was in every sense the love of his life. He never recovered from her untimely death from consumption.
