French, Realist Painter. He was a very gifted artist with pencil by age 9. In Paris he supported himself by working as a postal clerk until he realized that he could work as an artist. He studied under Alexandre Cabanel, first exhibited at the Paris Salon of 1870. He was also a portraitist of note. He fought in the Franco-Prussian war. He was described as a man of honesty and sincerity. He was very assertive and positive. He showed a great enthusiasm for other art, and had a deep love of nature. He had many friends. It seems, however, that his strongest quality was that he was always determined to paint and live in his own way.
